Multi-Lens Analysis

To understand and navigate complex and contested issues, we need to start by viewing them through many different lenses. We call this Multi-Lens Analysis or MLA.

Leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models (LLMs), Dragonfly Thinking is in the process of developing a new AI-enabled tool to apply MLA.

Our MLA technique is based on an approach developed by Anthea Roberts and Nicolas Lamp in their book Six Faces of Globalization, which was published by Harvard University Press.

Multi-lens analysis is important

In studies of superforecasters, political scientist and psychologist Philip Tetlock shows that people who integrate insights from multiple perspectives have an increased likelihood of developing a more accurate understanding of complex problems than those relying solely on a single perspective.

In studies of peace and conflict, psychologist Peter Suedfeld and his colleagues found that leaders who are able to view conflicts from multiple perspectives have a greater chance of finding peaceful ways to resolve them by identifying potential alliances and brokering effective compromises.

The latest edition of Structured Analytic Techniques for Intelligence Analysis by Randy Pherson and Richards Heuer—used by intelligence agencies worldwide—includes “Analysis by Contrasting Narratives” as one of its newest techniques, drawing on the work by Peter de Werd
